Right, this is the question we get every August without fail: “how’s the snow looking this year?” And every August we give the same honest answer — we’ve got an early read, and it’s worth paying attention to, but nobody actually knows yet. Here’s what’s actually going on.
So what’s happening this year?
As of August 2026, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center has El Niño conditions developing through the northern hemisphere winter, with somewhere around 96–98% odds it sticks around through winter 2026–27 — and a real chance (roughly 63% in current model runs) it turns into a genuinely strong “Super El Niño,” peaking around October to December 2026. That’s a meaningfully different setup to last winter, which ran on La Niña.
For the science-curious: El Niño tends to weaken the Siberian High, which weakens the cold, dry northwesterly winds that stream across the Sea of Japan and dump snow on this side of the country. Less of that pressure gradient generally means fewer sustained cold outbreaks and, on average, less snow than a strong La Niña winter. That’s the textbook version, anyway.
Why we won’t really know until December
The Japan Meteorological Agency drops its official long-range winter outlook on the 20th of September — mark it if you like, we’ll be reading it the moment it’s out. But here’s the thing we tell every guest who asks: a seasonal outlook in September is a probability, not a forecast. It’s built off ocean temperature trends months out, and El Niño’s strength and exact behaviour can still shift a fair bit between now and when it actually matters.
The pattern that actually decides your ski trip — how cold December gets, whether the Siberian High is behaving itself, whether the early-season storm track sets up over Niigata and Gunma or slides past them — doesn’t really show its hand until late November and December. That’s genuinely when we start reading it with any confidence, not September. So yes, read the JMA outlook when it lands. Just don’t treat it as gospel.
Is an El Niño winter actually bad?
Not necessarily, and we say that as guides who’ve skied through a few of these, not as people trying to sell you a trip. El Niño winters in Japan do tend to run warmer and less consistently snowy on average — but “on average” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. We’ve had El Niño seasons with genuinely excellent storm cycles, just fewer of them and closer together, and years where the higher-elevation zones (Mt Myoko, Mt T, Kagura’s top lift) kept delivering long after the lower resorts went patchy. Elevation and terrain choice matter more in a year like this, not less — which is exactly where having a guide who’s reading conditions day to day earns its keep.

What we’d actually suggest
Book on the mountains, not the model. Higher-elevation zones tend to hold up better in an El Niño year, so have a think about Myoko or Mt T if you want to hedge your bets, and stay flexible on dates if you can — a guide who’s watching the pattern in real time can put you on the right slope on the right day regardless of what the season average ends up looking like.
